Univision Communications’ Margaret Lazo Elected to THF Board of Directors

The T. Howard Foundation Board of Directors recently elected Univision Communications Inc.’s Margaret Lazo, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, to membership on its board.

Lazo is an accomplished human resources professional. She joined Univision from GE Capital where she most recently served as Human Resources Leader for the North American Commercial Lending and Leasing businesses. From 2012 to 2013, she led Global Human Resources for GE Commercial Real Estate.

Prior to GE Capital, Lazo served in a number of human resources leadership roles at NBC Universal, including Executive Vice President of Human Resources for the cable & broadcast entertainment and digital properties, as well as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Telemundo Communications Group and Vice President of Human Resources for NBC’s owned television stations division. During her tenure, Lazo played a critical role during a period marked by high growth in cable networks, digital investment and transformation, the company’s strategic entry into the Spanish language market, and significant change for the broadcast businesses.

Lazo holds a degree in communications from St. John’s University. In addition to the T. Howard Foundation, she currently serves on the board of the Hispanic Federation.

Carlos Morcillo: THF Experience Opened Door at Telemundo

carlos-morcillo-telemundoCarlos Morcillo began his career in the media industry in 2012 when he was a T. Howard Foundation intern at Speakeasy. Today, Carlos serves as Manager, Affiliate Marketing at NBCUniversal/Telemundo. He was hired in 2013, shortly after graduating with a degree in advertising and marketing communications from Baruch College in December 2012.

Learn how the T. Howard Foundation introduced Carlos to careers in the competitive media industry, in his own words.

I was first introduced to the T. Howard Foundation (THF) via a career fair at Baruch College, but also through my wife, who was my girlfriend at the time. She forced me to go to the career fair during a time when I was not focused on my career goals and professional development. That is where I met Karla Morrison, Senior Program Manager, Internship Program.

After the rigorous application and interview process, I was lucky enough to intern with Speakeasy in the business development department. Scott Weiss, THF’s founder, is Speakeasy’s CEO. I secured my internship by demonstrating my ability to think outside of the box and ask smart questions.

During my internship, I worked closely with account managers to find business opportunities and also helped with the maintenance of the company’s CRM system.

THF Supports Interns Every Step of the Way
Interning for a communications consulting company gave me the opportunity to develop skills from a professional perspective. I also learned to focus on building my personal brand and improve my communication skills in a corporate environment. Those concepts were stressed from day one at THF’s Summer Intern Orientation. I still use what I learned there on a daily basis.

The support you get from the THF team and the connections you are able to build are priceless. Being a T. Howard Foundation intern and alumnus is something that will be a part of you throughout your entire professional career. The Foundation works tirelessly to expand its partnerships with top companies, and this only helps ensure that its name and reputation grows throughout the years.

Previous Media Experience Opened Full-Time Doors at NBCUniversal
As Manager, Affiliate Marketing, I am the main point of contact for more than 50 Telemundo broadcast affiliate stations in the U.S. for all marketing-related issues.

I work with multiple departments to supply our local stations with promotional strategies and materials for Telemundo’s novelas, specials and live sporting events, including El Señor de los Cielos, Señora Acero, Latin Billboard Awards, FIFA World Cup tournaments and the Summer Olympic Games. I must ensure that deliverables are being developed on schedule for activation, and sometimes that includes creating and delivering promos within hours.

Despite the fast turnaround time, there is no better feeling than seeing your work live and available for the entire world to experience.

THF Offers Professional Growth for Alumni
Over the past two years, I have been able to grow as a mentor, which allows me to serve as a support system and resource to my mentees, friends and colleagues. Being a THF mentor means behaving and thinking differently because my guidance can impact someone’s decisions and their professional development.

Advice for College Students Interested in Media
Television is a fast-paced environment and anything can change when you least expect it. You have to be prepared to adapt to change and maintain a clear mind to ensure a solution is identified immediately. Additionally, being able to anticipate problems and understand how the business works from all perspectives is crucial to ensure everything is working smoothly.

The application for 2017 internships is now open. The early deadline for submission is Monday, October 31. The final deadline is Thursday, December 1.

Charter Communications’ Jonathan Hargis Elected to THF Board of Directors

Jon Hargis Charter Communications.jpgThe T. Howard Foundation Board of Directors recently elected Jonathan Hargis, Charter Communications’ Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, to membership on its board.

In his role at Charter Communications, Hargis oversees the company’s full range of sales and marketing activities across the nation.

Prior to joining Charter in April 2012, Hargis served as Executive Vice President of Marketing at Cablevision, where he played a key role in developing the company’s marketing approach and competitive positioning. Before Cablevision, he held a number of leadership roles at AT&T.

In addition to serving on the board of the T. Howard Foundation, Hargis is board member for the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing, where he previously served as board chairperson.

 

THF Hosts 4th Annual HR Diversity Roundtable in NYC

On Wednesday, September 21, the T. Howard Foundation held its 4th Annual HR Diversity Roundtable at PwC in New York City.  The event  was hosted by THF board member, Ken Sharkey, Partner, Entertainment Media & Communications, PwC.

More than 16 leading media, entertainment, advertising and marketing companies were represented, including A+E Networks, Bloomberg, Grey, HBO, NBCUniversal, Publicis Media, Scripps Networks Interactive and Viacom.

THF’s HR Diversity Roundtable provides a platform for human resources, talent acquisition and diversity & inclusion professionals to discuss best practices, challenges and the value of recruiting and retaining diverse talent. It also provides THF with valuable insight to enhance our programs, assist our partners with identifying qualified, diverse talent and promote the achievement of their diversity goals.

THF MEN Meet & Greet Hosted by A+E Networks

On Tuesday, September 20, 2016, the T. Howard Foundation hosted a MEN (Mentor, Engage, Network) meet & greet at A+E Networks in New York City. THF’s male recruitment event provided a space for Internship Program alumni to reconnect with each other and the Foundation, while also bridging the connection with prospective intern candidates.

The event, part of the media industry’s Diversity Week, was held in A+E’s loft space. THF board members, David Zagin, A+E Networks’ President, Distribution, and Rich Warren, Executive Vice President, Content Negotiations & Strategy for Turner Content Distribution, both made presentations to the group.  Presentations were followed by a networking reception for executives, A+E HR professionals, THF alumni, prospective interns and special guests.

 

 

 

Disney Hosts THF Alumni Mixer

On August 4, THF staff members LaShika Howard, Senior Manager, Career and Alumni Services, and Brynton Lett, Associate Manager, Internship Program, joined more than 20 current THF interns and alumni at The Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, Calif. The group enjoyed a welcome reception at the lot’s Legends Plaza, followed by a brief history presentation, and a tour of the sets of hit television shows Code Black and black-ish.

After the tour, Ben Pyne, THF board member and President, Global Distribution, Disney Media Networks, greeted the group. Members of the talent acquisition and diversity teams were also present and engaged with the interns and alumni during a networking reception.

“It was wonderful connecting with fellow THF LA interns and alumni, and getting to visit the Disney lot was an extraordinarily special experience,” said Victor Li (THF ’16, Paramount Pictures)
