John Stankey AT&T.jpgJohn Stankey, CEO, AT&T Entertainment Group, will accept the T. Howard Foundation’s Corporate Excellence Award at its 24th annual  Diversity Awards Dinner.

Stankey is responsible for the company’s position facing the consumer market segment. He leads strategy, marketing and operations around the development and distribution of a premier entertainment experience. He also oversees AT&T’s entertainment offerings including TV, video and content development, its consumer mobility and wireless products, and its high speed internet services as well as its advertising business.
dan-york-pix-attAs a Diversity Award Dinner chair,  Daniel York, THF board member and AT&T Entertainment Group Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer,  will participate in the presentation of the Corporate Excellence Award.

York oversees AT&T’s video content and programming activities across all platforms, including strategy, investments, negotiations, acquisitions, operations, development and original content.

Executive committee to focus on program and resource development 

The T. Howard Foundation Board of Directors recently elected officers to lead the Foundation’s mission of diversifying the media and entertainment industry.
The executive committee’s overall responsibilities include setting policies and overseeing the expansion of the Foundation’s programs and services.

Univision Communications’ Margaret Lazo Elected to THF Board of Directors

The T. Howard Foundation Board of Directors recently elected Univision Communications Inc.’s Margaret Lazo, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, to membership on its board.

Lazo is an accomplished human resources professional. She joined Univision from GE Capital where she most recently served as Human Resources Leader for the North American Commercial Lending and Leasing businesses. From 2012 to 2013, she led Global Human Resources for GE Commercial Real Estate.

Prior to GE Capital, Lazo served in a number of human resources leadership roles at NBC Universal, including Executive Vice President of Human Resources for the cable & broadcast entertainment and digital properties, as well as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Telemundo Communications Group and Vice President of Human Resources for NBC’s owned television stations division. During her tenure, Lazo played a critical role during a period marked by high growth in cable networks, digital investment and transformation, the company’s strategic entry into the Spanish language market, and significant change for the broadcast businesses.

Lazo holds a degree in communications from St. John’s University. In addition to the T. Howard Foundation, she currently serves on the board of the Hispanic Federation.

Charter Communications’ Jonathan Hargis Elected to THF Board of Directors

Jon Hargis Charter Communications.jpgThe T. Howard Foundation Board of Directors recently elected Jonathan Hargis, Charter Communications’ Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, to membership on its board.

In his role at Charter Communications, Hargis oversees the company’s full range of sales and marketing activities across the nation.

Prior to joining Charter in April 2012, Hargis served as Executive Vice President of Marketing at Cablevision, where he played a key role in developing the company’s marketing approach and competitive positioning. Before Cablevision, he held a number of leadership roles at AT&T.

In addition to serving on the board of the T. Howard Foundation, Hargis is board member for the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing, where he previously served as board chairperson.

 

THF MEN Meet & Greet Hosted by A+E Networks

On Tuesday, September 20, 2016, the T. Howard Foundation hosted a MEN (Mentor, Engage, Network) meet & greet at A+E Networks in New York City. THF’s male recruitment event provided a space for Internship Program alumni to reconnect with each other and the Foundation, while also bridging the connection with prospective intern candidates.

The event, part of the media industry’s Diversity Week, was held in A+E’s loft space. THF board members, David Zagin, A+E Networks’ President, Distribution, and Rich Warren, Executive Vice President, Content Negotiations & Strategy for Turner Content Distribution, both made presentations to the group.  Presentations were followed by a networking reception for executives, A+E HR professionals, THF alumni, prospective interns and special guests.

 

 

 

800 Media Professionals Celebrate Industry Diversity Strides at THF’s Annual Awards Dinner and Fundraiser

For the 23rd year, the T. Howard Foundation (THF) brought together top media industry leaders at its annual Diversity Awards Dinner—but this year was different. Nearly 800—a record—media and entertainment professionals attended and supported THF and its programs for minority college students and young professionals seeking careers in media.

At the Diversity Awards Dinner, which took place on Wednesday, March 23 at New York City’s Cipriani Wall Street, THF recognized HBO and ABC for outstanding leadership in the area of diversity. Additionally, THF saluted its most recent internship program class and new hires, and acknowledged the internship host companies and employers.

“In 2015, THF placed 106 students in paid internships in the industry. The same year, 43 THF Internship Program alumni were hired into the industry, with an additional hired outside of media by such respected companies as Accenture, KPMG and Deloitte,” said Jo Pamphile, THF President & CEO.

Jasmine Shockness (THF ’11), Manager of Sales and Business Development at Viacom, spoke to attendees about her journey from THF intern at NBCUniversal to a full-time employee in the media industry. Shockness was acknowledged as THF’s 2016 Rising Star.

Russell Simmons, entrepreneur, author, activist and philanthropist, presented THF’s Corporate Excellence Award to his friend and colleague, Richard Plepler, Chairman & CEO of HBO. Simmons recounted his long-standing friendship with Plepler and professional relationship with HBO.

Accepting the Corporate Champion Award on behalf of Channing Dungey, President of ABC Entertainment, was Academy Award winner John Ridley. Dungey is the first African American to head a major network, and Ridley is the creator and executive producer of ABC’s “American Crime,” for which he has received an Emmy.

Additionally, THF presented two Diversity Partner Awards to Crown Media Family Networks and Microsoft Corporation. Bill Abbott, Crown Media’s President & CEO and Martin Sacchi, General Manager, Business Development, Media & Entertainment Group at Microsoft Corporation accepted the awards. Both companies have supported the Diversity Awards Dinner for more than four consecutive years.

During the evening, THF presented a silent auction with more than 30 items and exciting experiences donated by companies supporting the dinner, including tickets to a seven-day Disney Cruise, 2017 Super Bowl, season finale of “Project Runway,” and tapings of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”

Diversity Awards Dinner emcee, Juju Chang, Co-Anchor of ABC News’s “Nightline” led a live auction during dinner, featuring tickets to the 2017 college football championship game and a private 10-person dinner at the Food Network Kitchen and Studios.

A spontaneous live auction surprise happened when Mark Kang, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Distribution at INSP, took to the stage and auctioned off tickets to a Rihanna concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The generous winner gave the four tickets to THF interns.

Earlier in the day, THF hosted its 2nd annual Diversity Meet & Greet for New York-based Internship Program alumni who are actively seeking full-time positions in the media industry. Human resources representatives and recruiters from AMC Networks, Disney and ESPN Media Networks, Grey Group, HBO, Reuters and Viacom gave presentations and networked with more than 30 THF alumni.
